Vegan Night at The Golden Ball

Our first vegan night here at The Golden Ball was a great success. It was a night to show off our local produce, being in the heart of salad / veg growing land we knew the local produce would be perfect. In particular it was a night to celebrate mushrooms in particular thanks to our pals over at Smithy Mushrooms.

We are very big on sharing our knowledge and helping people understand that pretty much all our salad/veg is grown around us and our producers are all local.

We wanted to aim the night at both vegans and also people that simply wanted to try the quality produce grown around us.

Mal from Smithy Mushrooms was on hand to answer any questions from guests about the mushrooms, of which there were a few!

Smithy Mushrooms donated a pair of King Oysters for each guest to take home with them and test out their own recipes. If you're looking for recipe inspiration, be sure to check out Wicked Healthy, and their new Cookbook.

After talking to the guests half of them were vegan, 2 vegetarian and the rest came along simply because of their vegan friends or wanted to try something different.

Everyone had really positive feedback and have asked us to put more vegan dishes on the menus (especially mushroom ones!) so watch this space.

The Golden Ball Turns One

The Golden Ball – as you know it today – celebrated its first birthday this September. We’ve transitioned from a sports-mad local ale house to a traditional country dining pub with sophisticated décor and a genuine family-feel.

Of course, we couldn’t let this significant date go by unnoticed so, in what has become a traditional Golden Ball style, we invited the whole village of Longton along to celebrate, with a delicious hog roast and beautiful live music.

Hearty food and a buzzing atmosphere

Rob Owen Brown, of Hinchcliffe Arms, is renowned for his delicious hog roasts. As a close friend of the pub, Rob came along to prepare us a hog roast dinner that would serve all of our guests, free of charge to guests courtesy of Rob & Chris (The Golden Ball owner). Complete with soft white barmcakes, delicious sauces and all the trimmings. This went down a storm, and thanks to the lovely weather, we were all able to enjoy our food sitting on the outside terrace, chatting and catching up with our regulars (and some new guests too)!

The pub was packed long into the night. As with all Golden Ball events, the atmosphere was fun, relaxed and friendly, with families, couples and dogs all in tow.

Local artist helps celebrate our big birthday

Live music is always well received at The Golden Ball. Local artist, Lindsay Ritson, entertained guests with an eclectic mix of songs that provided something to suit everybody.

In fact, her music was so enjoyable that we’re now introducing Feel Good Fridays on the 1st Friday of every month. This event will see Lindsay join us for a regular set, giving visitors a chance to let their hair down and enjoy some beautiful live music once a month.

To round off the night, The Golden Ball allowed guests to soak up the atmosphere indoors and out, relaxing in one of the many comfortable nooks and crannies found in the refurbished country pub – either in front of the fire or out on the terrace, enjoying the pleasant Autumn weather.

The Golden Ball Goes Live!

The Golden Ball Goes Live!

July saw the return of Longton Live – an annual music festival on the streets of Longton – hosted by the pubs, stores and churches across the village. This was our second year taking part in the event, and inspired by the hottest summer we’ve had in decades, The Golden Ball opted for a sizzling beach theme.

Local acts steal the show at Longton Live

As tradition dictates, our stages were graced by the best in local talent; including lively duo Ryan and Craig, popular bands ‘Sugastone’, ‘Electric Cheese’, ‘Chique Acoustic’ and ‘Reborn Generation’, alongside vocalists Marc Gallagher, Millie-Mae Hill and Lindsay Marie. Punters were also treated to delicious homemade ice cream, courtesy of The Cow’s Shed, and quenched their thirst with crisp prosecco and fruity gin cocktails.

Music and dancing continued until late on both days of the event, with revellers moving from the sun-drenched terrace to the bustling atmosphere indoors as the sun went down. The festival continued across Friday 13th and Saturday 14th July, with each venue hosting four acts on each date.

Exclusive, ticket only admission

Wristband entry is part of what makes Longton Live so successful. Each act volunteers to take part and villagers are then invited to purchase a wristband to ensure exclusive entry to each venue. Part of the cash raised is given to the acts as a thank you, while the rest goes into funding the entertainment package for the whole village.

Guests are given a festival-wide schedule well in advance, so they can plan their trip accordingly and be sure to see their favourite local artists. Once the event kicks off, it’s simply a case of wandering through the village – from churches, to bars and hardware stores – sampling the delightful entertainment, great food and drink, and soaking in the festival atmosphere.

Or you might prefer to get settled at your favourite haunt, like The Golden Ball, and watch each exciting new artist take the stage, without moving from your seat. Take a look at our video above to catch all the antics from Longton Live, and don’t forget to pop the dates in your diary for next year!
